Impromptu Speech? Wait what? Mark Twain once said “It usually takes me more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.”

Now here is an easy exercise for those situations when you don’t have preparation time. It’s technique everyone can master.

Assume you’ve got 2 minutes and begin a stream-of-consciousness narrative out loud. Talk about what you’re seeing, what you’re thinking, what you’re doing, and then do your best to wrap it up with some kind of through line, pulling together what you’ve said.

It doesn’t have to be brilliant, but it’s important that you do it. You’ll find yourself getting better and better, and it’s great practice for meaningful impromptu commentary!

You’ll see what I mean in this three minute video.
