Do you know what filler words are?

Um, uh, like, y’know… Filler Words actively detract from your credibility, and pretty soon the audience can’t hear what you’re saying. They only hear the distractions.

Exercises like having someone ding a bell whenever you use a filler word can be useful, but going to the root of the cause is what I have found to be more helpful.

The root cause of using filler words is not being present. When you relax in the present you are mindful and focused.

Filler words are caused by nerves, insecurity, lack of preparation, not feeling sure of your subject. Whatever the cause, when you identify and deal with it you will be much more present and the filler words will disappear.

To make the best impression possible when you speak, on stage, or in a conference room, relax in the present. Your audience will understand that your message is important and you’ll be amazed by the results.
